Stress Injuries in the Older Athlete

In Bill’s practice a lot of “Masters Athletes” – those older than 40 years old – present with stress injuries to bone and soft-tissues. Diagnosis and Management is an important part of Bill’s working week. However, he is equally concerned about preventing injury recurrence.

One of the most important predictors of suffering from a fracture is having had a previous fracture. The latter increases the risk of a further fracture significantly. However, a number of studies have shown that only a small minority of patients receive appropriate evaluation and advice following primary injury. Similar risk profiles apply to such common problems as ankle ligament sprains and Achilles tendon injuries.

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from such injuries talk to your treating clinician about further investigation.
